NEWS- JUNE, 2008

Thank you for checking out Red Square Yoga News. There are a few things to note.

Stacy will be out of the studio from June 17 until July 21. During that time, Melissa Middlebrook will be teaching Stacy’s Monday 10:00 a.m. and Thursday 7:00 p.m classes in addition to her own Sunday 10:00 a.m. class. Charlie Heffernan will be teaching Stacy’s Friday a.m. class and will continue to lead the Sunday 6:30-8:00 p.m. meditation. Check out their bio’s at www.redsquareyoga.com/Instructors.html. I think you will enjoy their teaching and guidance. Please feel free to talk to them about yoga and classes. They are really great teachers.

I’ve noticed that some of you who come regularly are paying each time. Please note that you can drop a check in the box for 6 times and make a card for yourself in the small black box. The recommended donation is $60 for 6 sessions. Again, you’ll keep track of them yourself, by noting the date of each class you attend. There is no official expiration. Just please be reasonable. When you put your name on the sign-in sheet, please put a ‘c’ by your name to indicate you have a card.

Private sessions are available by appointment. We work one-on-one with students to help you find your optimal practice. We work on a sliding scale bases with the top end of the range being $70 per/hour.

There will be no classes the entire weekend of 4 July.

OTHER OFFERINGS

At Red Square Yoga we hope that you not only do your yoga on the mat but that you engage purposefully and productively in the larger world that you live in. We encourage you to volunteer on whatever level you are able. Volunteer work can be big or little. This is the path of Karma Yoga. You may also have heard the word Seva which means self-less service. A little bit goes a long way.

Are you Living with cancer, the after effects, or know someone who is? Head to Gilda’s Club of Seattle where all are welcome. Gilda’s offers a full range of classes, support groups, wellness groups, special events, and kids’ programming for those living with cancer, their family, caregivers, and friends. Note that Stacy teaches yoga at Gilda’s on Fridays from 12:00-1:15 p.m. Catherine LaDuke, (friend and student of Stacy’s) teaches yoga there on Tuesday evenings from 6:15-7:30. You’ll find Gilda’s on the web at www.gildasclubseattle.org

Finally please remember that regular students are entitled to purchase props at a discount from Bhakti Bheka If you are in the market for ‘clean’ yoga props, please check out their website.

You’ll notice the studio has some new props: foam rollers, sandbags, hand wedges, and eyebags for asana support. The aim is to continue to keep the work safe, interesting, and progressing towards our own ‘personal best’ postures.

A few good books have come my way. Melissa recently recommended The soul of Money by Lynne Twist.

I’ve recently reread Twyla Tharp’s The Creative Habit. While I use Yoga discipline to help me with my writing, I’ve also begun to work it in the reverse. I see that my creative habits are also reinforcing my yoga practice.

The next two may seem a bit grim, but they are also inspiring works that can help us gain perspective: The Anatomy of Hope; How People Prevail in the Face of Illness by Adam Groopman.

And, my final pick is The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. Randy, a professor from Carnegie Melon University, was diagnosed with fatal pancreatic cancer. His last lecture is a gentle wake-up call for the rest of us. You can also listen to his last lecture

For fun, be sure to read your horoscope in the Stranger each week!

Read, Reflect, Think, Discuss, and consider taking thoughtful action.
